Finding a Pet-Friendly Assisted Living Facility

Do you have a loved one who’s resisting the idea of moving to an assisted living facility because they can’t bear to part with their pet? The good news is that an increasing number of assisted living facilities are becoming pet friendly. Here are some tips along with why and how you should find a pet-friendly assisted living facility for your loved one.

Benefits of Pet Ownership for Seniors

Studies have shown many physical and mental benefits of pet ownership for seniors, including:

  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Decreased depression
  • More mental stimulation
  • Lower triglycerides and cholesterol
  • Improved spirits for people who struggle with memory impairment
  • Decreased stress
  • Increased learning
  • Improved spontaneity
  • Reduced loneliness
  • Improved survival rate after a heart attack

Finding a Pet-Friendly Assisted Living Facility

Assisted living facilities that allow pets have varying rules about what they will allow. Typically, small or medium dogs and cats are allowed. Large breed dogs may be forbidden, while other small animals like fish or birds might be allowed. Many pet-friendly assisted living facilities limit the number of pets to only one or two per resident.

Assisted living facilities might also require additional fees or deposits for pets. In exchange, they might offer extra services like grooming. It’s important to ask potential assisted living facilities about every detail of their pet policy before you move in your loved one.

Questions to Ask Pet-Friendly Communities

Here are some questions that may help you decide which pet-friendly assisted living facility is best for your loved one:

  • Is there a safe place to walk your dog (or cat)?
  • Where can your pet go to do their business?
  • How much are the pet deposits or fees?
  • Is the pet area well-lit?
  • What are all the rules regarding pets?

Best Dog Breeds for Seniors

Keeping in mind assisted living facility rules and the energy levels of the average senior, some dog breeds are better suited to older adults than other dog breeds. Here are a few dog breeds that are the best choices for seniors:

  • Boston Terrier
  • Pug
  • Poodle (Miniature or Toy)
  • Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie)
  • Shih Tzu
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Miniature Schnauzer
  • Bolognese
  • Maltese
  • Pekingese

Keep in mind that many of these dog breeds have continuously growing hair that needs regular brushing and trimming. Most dogs should get professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks, which may cost anywhere from $30 to $75 depending on the dog breed and where you (or your loved one) live.
