Understanding ADLs and IADLs in Senior Living

When you first begin to investigate senior care options for a Dallas or Fort Worth area loved one, you might find the terminology to be a little confusing. The senior living industry is prone to using acronyms to describe everything from what type of care an older adult requires to the tools they use to assess someone’s memory.

Two common terms you will encounter often are ADL and IADL. They stand for Activities of Daily Living and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. These are important ones to understand because they are used to determine how much care a future resident needs. In most cases, this information is used to calculate what their monthly fee will be. How to Talk with a Parent’s Physician About Senior Care

Family members, like those we work with in north Texas, often spot the warning signs that indicate a senior loved one needs help before they even realize it themselves. An adult child might question if a parent’s balance issues make them unsafe living alone at home or if a change in their senior’s personality is really a symptom of the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The best person to turn to for advice is typically your family member’s primary care physician. He or she can help you assess the situation and make recommendations on what type of senior care they feel might be the next step. [Read more…]

Understanding Alzheimer’s Wandering

For north Texas adult children and spouses who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, wandering is one of the most difficult and frightening behaviors to safely manage. While much remains unknown about this debilitating disease, experts do have some theories about wandering. Many believe the behavior may be caused by unmet needs and an inability to communicate them due to lost language skills.

Older adults with Alzheimer’s disease might not recognize their surroundings and wander off to look for “home.” Or they may be hungry or thirsty and go in search of food or water. An urge to use the bathroom and not know how to find it is believed to be another cause of wandering. Whatever it is that leads a senior to wander, the result is anxiety and stress for adult children and family caregivers in and around Dallas and Fort Worth. [Read more…]

Why Do Seniors End Up in the Emergency Room?

Emergencies happen to all of us from time to time. But as we grow older, the likelihood of a trip to the emergency department of a local hospital becomes increasingly more common. Seniors account for more than 19.6 million trips to emergency departments in the United States every year.

Because so many seniors end up in the emergency room every year, there has been a recent movement in the healthcare industry to redesign ERs to be more accommodating to the needs of older adults. These specialty senior ERs have features that are different from a typical emergency room including:

  • Softer lighting
  • Non-slip floors
  • Bedside toilets
  • Thicker mattresses

Will Medicare Pay for a Nursing Home?

Understanding if and what part of nursing home care Medicare will pay for is very confusing. It is also one of the first big concerns Dallas- Fort Worth area families typically have when they begin searching for a nursing home. We thought it would help caregivers if we provided a quick overview of how Medicare works when it comes to nursing home care.

Medicare & Nursing Homes

In general, Medicare only covers what is referred to as “medically-necessary care.” Unfortunately, this means Medicare will not pay for long-term care in a nursing home. It will only cover rehabilitative care on a short-term basis. For most families, this is a real eye-opener. [Read more…]
