Understanding Aggression in Men with Alzheimer’s

Adults who work in assisted living communities have long suspected there were underlying reasons to explain some of the trends in memory care program admissions. Even though the number of women who live in senior living communities is significantly greater than the number of men, more men than women are being admitted to memory care programs across the country. In fact, men are moving in to dementia care communities at a rate that is 14% faster than women.

Researchers who dug in to this issue discovered a few very interesting differences between men and women who have Alzheimer’s disease. [Read more…]

What to Consider Before Moving a Parent in with You

The number of multi-generational households in this country continues to climb. According to researchers, 18% of the U.S. population lives in a home with loved ones who span several generations. From young adults returning home to live with parents to older adults moving in with adult children, a record setting 57 million Americans are part of a multi-generational household.

It isn’t uncommon for sandwich generation adults in the Dallas – Fort Worth areas to consider moving an older parent into their own family home. It helps on a variety of fronts. Grandparents can provide afterschool supervision and emotional support while parents are at work. Older adults who feel isolated living alone or are experiencing health problems benefit from being around their loved ones. [Read more…]

Beating Caregiver Stress During the Holidays

When you add caring for a north Texas senior loved one to that list, it can result in a potentially serious case of caregiver burnout.

Not surprisingly, four in ten caregivers say they can’t manage it all during the holidays. But there are steps you can take to lighten your load and take care of your own mental, emotional, and physical health during the holiday season. [Read more…]

Understanding ADLs and IADLs in Senior Living

When you first begin to investigate senior care options for a Dallas or Fort Worth area loved one, you might find the terminology to be a little confusing. The senior living industry is prone to using acronyms to describe everything from what type of care an older adult requires to the tools they use to assess someone’s memory.

Two common terms you will encounter often are ADL and IADL. They stand for Activities of Daily Living and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. These are important ones to understand because they are used to determine how much care a future resident needs. In most cases, this information is used to calculate what their monthly fee will be. How to Talk with a Parent’s Physician About Senior Care

Family members, like those we work with in north Texas, often spot the warning signs that indicate a senior loved one needs help before they even realize it themselves. An adult child might question if a parent’s balance issues make them unsafe living alone at home or if a change in their senior’s personality is really a symptom of the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The best person to turn to for advice is typically your family member’s primary care physician. He or she can help you assess the situation and make recommendations on what type of senior care they feel might be the next step. [Read more…]
