Finding Assisted Living Care for Your Loved One after an Injury

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every three adults age 65 and older will suffer from a fall. Many of these falls result in moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, or head traumas. These injuries can make it hard to get around or live independently. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury death. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. Many people who fall, even if they are not seriously injured, develop a fear of falling. Having this fear may lead to an increased risk of falling because they limit their physical activities.

My mother came to live with my husband and me after breaking her hip.  It was a difficult decision to move from Ohio to Texas, and the transition was causing a great deal of stress for an independent 89 yr. old woman.  Three different sources, thankfully, recommended Paul Markowitz of Senior Living Specialists, and it was the beginning of hopefulness in an overwhelming situation.  Paul’s one-on-one meeting with us was intuitive and insightful.  Within a short period Paul gave us a concise summary of Garland independent and assisted living homes closely matched to my mother’s needs, the budget and proximity to our home.  Although we had previously researched on-line, we were given names of facilities that we were not aware were nearby.  This report made our search productive and focused.  Most importantly we learned about the financial stability of the facility and the caregivers who worked there.  These were valuable insights that became apparent as we visited the homes. Paul’s advice comes from personal knowledge and he truly cares about his recommendations. Today, my mother is in a loving and caring assisted living environment, near our home, and actively engaged in a happy senior life. – Very grateful, Barry and Joan H,  Garland TX

Is There a Difference between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

Having a loved one diagnosed with a serious illness can be overwhelming. Many people with older loved ones wonder about the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia. The most important distinction is that the term dementia refers to a set of symptoms, not a specific disease. Dementia symptoms often include things like language difficulty or loss of recent memory or poor judgment. These symptoms, when they interfere with day-to-day life, can characterize someone as having dementia. People with severe dementia may have one of many diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy Bodies and Frontotemporal dementia.

Doctors can make a more specific diagnosis through blood tests, a mental status evaluation, neuropsychological testing, and sometimes a brain scan. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 60-70 percent of cases of dementia. In the early stages of a dementia related disease, there can be some clear differences that help doctors reach a diagnosis. However, as each specific disease advances, more parts of the brain become affected, making it more difficult to notice the differences between them. The bottom line is this: all people with Alzheimer’s have dementia, but not all people with dementia have Alzheimer’s. Any form of dementia can be difficult to manage and likely requires specialized long-term care.

Latest Developments in Alzheimer’s Research

Once Alzheimer’s becomes personal, you find yourself following the latest news topics and scientific research on the disease. Some of the most recent coverage has reported that the studies of the eye can lead to earlier Alzheimer’s diagnosis. One hallmark of Alzheimer’s is the accumulation of sticky plaques in the brain, made up of proteins called beta amyloid. Unfortunately, there’s no definitive test that can confirm the presence of the plaques. Recently, though, researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles discovered that a corresponding amount of protein can be found in the very back of the eye. Based on their research, a noninvasive test was developed to check a person’s retina for the beta amyloid plaques. More studies are needed, but this research may lead to earlier diagnosis, helping Alzheimer’s victims and their families. Click here for more info on this new Alzheimer’s research.
