DFW Alzheimer’s Care – The Importance of Diagnosis

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has reported that many people ask them “why bother” to get an official diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. This is a legitimate question, given that the reality of Alzheimer’s care right now is that there are no effective treatments to prevent, reverse, or cure the disease.

According to the AFA, a recent survey found that 29 to 76 percent of people with dementia or probable dementia have not been diagnosed by a primary care physician. An official Alzheimer’s diagnosis is important, though. Not only can it put the person in the care of expert specialists, it also allows the person and his or her family to prepare for future care needs. While no cure exists for Alzheimer’s, there are treatments that can slow the progression of symptoms and clinical trials are often available. Support services for the person and family are also more readily available with an official diagnosis.

DFW Area Alzheimer’s Care Facilities

In general, it’s often easier to deal with a tough situation when you have access to information about it. The same is true of finding an Alzheimer’s care facility here in the DFW area. In 2008, I was faced with the issue of finding specialized care for my mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. With so many Alzheimer’s care and assisted living facilities in our area, it took a lot of research and investigation of my own to find the right place. That experience inspired me to create a FREE service to help other families just like I helped Rebecca, below. Contact me today to get your free guide.

I wanted to let you know what a huge weight has been lifted from our shoulders. The first time we moved our father, there were endless trips to different care facilities around DFW. As our father progressed with his Alzheimer’s, and after 3 years, it became more evident that we would be facing this challenge yet again, only this time with his diagnoses in mind. You made the daunting task of placing our father in a Dallas Assisted Living very palatable. I think it’s the hardest decision you face with a loving parent. The information that you provided for us was invaluable. Not only did you supply the places to go, who to speak with, but, also had good background on the various Dallas Assisted Living Communities themselves and the people running them. We couldn’t be happier with the suggestions put forth by you and your team. We are extremely happy with our choice of an Alzheimer’s Care Facility in the DFW area. Everyone who has a parent in need of Alzheimer’s care should be contacting you.

Assisted Living Facilities Coppell TX

Assisted living facilities have been in the news lately. In response to a television report about abuses in assisted living facilities, a state senator in CA is introducing legislation to protect seniors and other states are sure to follow suit. The investigative article reported that at least 27 seniors have died due to documented neglect and abuse in assisted living facilities in the county since 2008.

Assisted Living Facilities, Coppell TX and DFW Areas

It’s unfortunate that assisted living facilities only make the news when something awful happens. The truth is, there are many very positive things to say about the assisted living and senior care industries. Many people here in the Coppell and DFW areas are living safely and comfortably in assisted living facilities. As a family member, though, it’s easy to worry about selecting the right facility for your loved one. [Read more…]

Assisted Living Group Homes Murphy TX

Help in Finding Assisted Living Group Homes

As the population ages, more and more families are looking for assisted living group homes and facilities in the Murphy TX and DFW areas. Not all assisted living facilities are the same. There are many different levels of care that help define an assisted living facility. Levels of care in assisted living facilities are often based on the specific needs of the person. Here are some questions that determine the level of care a facility offers (and charges for):

  • Can the person safely take care of their bathing needs?
  • Can the person dress without assistance, including find motor functions such as zipping and buttoning?
  • Can the person take care of grooming needs such as shaving, brushing hair, and brushing teeth?
  • How much mobility assistance does the person need?
  • Can the person manage any incontinence issues without assistance?
  • How many caregivers does the person need, and how often?
  • Does the person need assistance eating?
  • Does the person need injectable medications?
  • Does the person need assistance with laundry?
  • Does the person have a specialized condition that requires extra care, such as dementia?

My mom was struggling in the Assistant Living facility that she was in prior to where she is now. When we realized that mom needed more individual care than she was able to get at this facility, I contacted Senior Living Specialists. The thing that I liked most about the service was the fact that they understood we had to “take care of business” quickly. They were very forthcoming with ideas and immediately suggested I call a Murphy Assisted Living Group Home. They were very knowledgeable about the area we wanted to stay in and never tried to “up sell” us with any more than I was looking for. I have recommended Senior Living Specialists to a couple of friends already. I also know my sister has given their contact information to a good friend who was in “crisis mode” to help her loved one. I will continue to recommend both Senior Living Specialists to anybody that I can. ~ Anne, Murphy, TX

My mother came to live with my husband and me after breaking her hip.  It was a difficult decision to move from Ohio to Texas, and the transition was causing a great deal of stress for an independent 89 yr. old woman.  Three different sources, thankfully, recommended Paul Markowitz of Senior Living Specialists, and it was the beginning of hopefulness in an overwhelming situation.  Paul’s one-on-one meeting with us was intuitive and insightful.  Within a short period Paul gave us a concise summary of Garland independent and assisted living homes closely matched to my mother’s needs, the budget and proximity to our home.  Although we had previously researched on-line, we were given names of facilities that we were not aware were nearby.  This report made our search productive and focused.  Most importantly we learned about the financial stability of the facility and the caregivers who worked there.  These were valuable insights that became apparent as we visited the homes. Paul’s advice comes from personal knowledge and he truly cares about his recommendations. Today, my mother is in a loving and caring assisted living environment, near our home, and actively engaged in a happy senior life. – Very grateful, Barry and Joan H,  Garland TX

Dallas Assisted Living Resources

It’s hard to watch a loved one get older and face the possibility of losing his or her independence. How do you know if assisted living is the right choice? Here are some signs that it might be time to consider looking at several Dallas assisted living resources for your loved one:

  • Vision loss. Not being able to see clearly can considerably impact a person’s quality of life. When people can’t see well enough to properly take medications, prepare meals, or provide transportation for themselves, they need extra assistance to stay safe and healthy.
  • Hearing. Loss of hearing can be a significant barrier to a person living independently. If hearing loss, even when corrected with hearing aids, interferes with communication or a person’s ability to live safely, an assisted living facility may be needed.
  • Medication compliance. One of the most critical needs that an assisted living facility can fulfill is making sure your loved one receives his or her medication on schedule. If you notice that pills aren’t being taken regularly or refills aren’t being filled on schedule, it could be a sign that your loved one needs more help. [Read more…]
