Beating Caregiver Stress During the Holidays

The holidays can be a challenging time of year for everyone. But for already overloaded family caregivers, there are added pressures. Seasonal tasks such as shopping for holiday gifts, wrapping presents, decorating the house and hosting parties can take a toll. When you add caring for a north Texas senior loved one to that list, it can result in a potentially serious case of caregiver burnout.

Not surprisingly, four in ten caregivers say they can’t manage it all during the holidays. But there are steps you can take to lighten your load and take care of your own mental, emotional, and physical health during the holiday season. [Read more…]

Understanding ADLs and IADLs in Senior Living

When you first begin to investigate senior care options for a Dallas or Fort Worth area loved one, you might find the terminology to be a little confusing. The senior living industry is prone to using acronyms to describe everything from what type of care an older adult requires to the tools they use to assess someone’s memory.

Two common terms you will encounter often are ADL and IADL. They stand for Activities of Daily Living and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. These are important ones to understand because they are used to determine how much care a future resident needs. In most cases, this information is used to calculate what their monthly fee will be. Cost of Independent Senior Housing in Dallas and Fort Worth

Older adults often find an independent living community to be an ideal housing option for their early retirement years. These communities give seniors the opportunity to live an active life free from the worries of home maintenance and repairs. The focus is on life enrichment and wellness.

Because this type of senior housing varies widely, so do the costs. Expenses can range from a low income, sliding scale fee senior apartment to a very expensive villa that is part of a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). There may also be entrance fees and application fees to consider. On average, the monthly rental on an independent living apartment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is between $1,285 and $13,535 per month. [Read more…]

How Much Does a Nursing Home in Dallas Cost?

We know paying for nursing home care for a Dallas-Fort Worth senior loved one is a big concern for many of the families we work with. If your family member truly needs long-term, skilled nursing care and not an assisted living community, the costs can really add up.

Nursing homes use a daily room rate system for pricing. Most communities offer residents the choice between a semi-private and a private room. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the median daily rate for a nursing home is $186. Overall prices range from $140 to $325 per day. On average, a family should expect to pay $56,940 per year for a senior loved one’s care in a semi-private suite in a north Texas nursing home. [Read more…]

What are the Differences between Home Care and Home Health Care?

One question families in north Texas routinely ask us to address is what the difference is between home care and home health care. There are, in fact, distinct differences. While both can be delivered in the privacy of an older adult’s Dallas or Fort Worth home, the type of care provided is quite different.

Home Health Care in North Texas

Home health care is designed to bring skilled care and services in to the home. It might be medical care that is provided by a registered nurse or the therapeutic support of a physical therapist, speech therapist or occupational therapist. It most often follows a stay in the hospital for an injury, surgery or illness. Home health care allows the senior to continue to recuperate in their own home. [Read more…]
