What Comes Next When a Parent Needs Assisted Living?

If your family has recently come to the conclusion that an aging loved one is no longer safe in their north Texas home, it can be a relief to finally admit it. For many families this acceptance can be a long time coming. But relief may be quickly followed by feelings of confusion and uncertainty. Adult children may not be at all familiar with what an assisted living community is and how to find one a parent will be happy with.

Assisted Living Placement in Fort Worth, Texas

Dear Paul,

My parents have both had a variety of health issues over the past few years. While they don’t necessarily require around the clock care, they do need assistance here and there throughout the day and night.

We’ve tried to use home care agencies and it just doesn’t work well. The primary problem is we can’t afford for them to be in my parents’ home all of the time. The intermittent nature of their needs (i.e. using the bathroom in the middle of the night) is such a struggle for us to manage. My wife, my sister and I are running back and forth to their home several times a day. All three of us work full time and it’s beginning to impact our jobs.

This weekend we decided we need to talk with mom and dad about moving to an assisted living community somewhere here in Fort Worth . We would sure appreciate a few “talking points” that might help us convince them of the benefits of making such a move.

Adults with the disease frequently have young children at home and a full-time career.

Understanding Parkinson’s Disease

While most people have heard of Parkinson’s, how challenging the disease can be isn’t as widely understood. PD is a neurodegenerative disease that results when the body ceases to produce the amount of dopamine it needs. Dopamine is a chemical our body requires to swiftly and smoothly relay messages back and forth between the brain and the body. That relay is necessary for smooth muscle movements. [Read more…]
