What does the Texas Assisted Living Association say about the COVID-19 vaccine?

The COVID-19 pandemic has turned the lives of many upside down over the past year. Residents of assisted living communities have been impacted disproprotionately; both directly by the COVID-19 virus and indirectly through social isolation. Now, with a light at the end of the tunnel in the form of vaccinations, many people have questions.

The Texas Assisted Living Association offered training to its members in January 2021 providing education on the two early vaccines being offered in the United States; Moderna and Pfizer. The TALA addressed the question of why to get a vaccine primarily focusing on safety for oneself and one’s community, as well as setting an example for others in the community.

The TALA answers frequently asked questions regarding the efficacy of the vaccines; Moderna 94.1% and Pfzier at 95%. It also addresses how it was possible that these vaccines were made so quickly, and yet can still be safe and effective. Simply put, this was a global effort with nearly unlimited resources all being directed towards a single cause.

Many wonder what needs to be done after receiving both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. For the time being, masks and social distancing guidelines still need to continue to protect those who may not have had access to the vaccine or who may not be able to receive it due to other medical issues. Recently, we have seen some of the benefits of vaccinations as Texas nursing homes and assisted livings have been able to resume physical contact during visits– bringing back the much needed hugs.
